The internet - like the world - is a massive and often confusing place

There are tens of millions of sites to visit on the internet. Lots you’ll actually need. Three listed here but there are lots more (click more at the bottom):

1. Make magazine’s videos and podcasts (blog.makezine.com/podcast) have dozens of weekend projects, some macho, some crafty, for the DIY-minded.

2. The Orwell Diaries (orwelldiaries.wordpress.com) publish George Orwell’s domestic and political diaries as a blog, exactly 70 years after they were originally written.

3. Everything on iTunes (apple.com/itunes) is free, amazing given that it offers recordings of lectures from some of the world’s most venerable institutions (Yale, Moma, Oxford, Tate).

Virus of the Mind: The New Science of the Meme

A meme is a unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals or other imitable phenomena. Supporters of the concept regard memes as cultural analogues to genes, in that they self-replicate and respond to selective pressures.

Meme-theorists contend that memes evolve by natural selection through the processes of variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance influencing an individual meme’s reproductive success. Memes spread through the behaviors that they generate in their hosts.

Latest Forbes Study Reveals Need for Video SEO in B2B Space

The report stressed the importance of short video clips – not commercials per se, but rather informative videos that explain complex product areas. 33% of executives in the under-50 group reported viewing work-related videos at least daily, with 26% using such videos “several times per week.” Although there was a major divide in executives over 50, only six percent of all the executives in the study reported that they “never” watch work-related videos online.

Clever Job Hunter Used Google to Target Employers

When top advertising creative directors searched for their own names on Google they saw an Google AdWord ad by Alec Brownstein asking them for a job. It led to interviews with four of the people he targeted and two of them offered him a job.

#Google Says Meta Descriptions are Still Important in #SEO

Google’s Matt Cutts says meta descriptions are still important in search engine optimization. A meta description is the entry you read on a Google search page before you click on the link. Obviously, the way you describe your business can entice or turn off potential customers. You especially want to be accurate. If you advertise your self as a fine hair stylist and you are a down and dirty barber, you mislead your customers. But most of all you want this description to be interesting. The wording should be crisp and enticing.

Are meta keywords important? No. In this video Matt Cutts says don’t spend any time on them. Google’s algorithm completely ignores meta keywords. Although, I do think that going through the exercise of writing your keywords out on a piece of paper does help crystallize your unique brand and value proposition. Other than that, keywords are meaningless.
